ABOUT
Olivia Babu, Owner and Ceramicist
Growing up, I loved the idea of creating my own business. I was always building things, taking on DIY projects, and finding ways to make something with my hands. After college, I made the unexpected decision to move from New York to a small town in Michigan. With plenty of time on my hands after work, I joined a pottery studio. I met incredible potters who taught me so much about the craft, and ceramics quickly became a meditative outlet for me.
A year later, when I moved to San Francisco, I knew exactly what I was looking for in my next studio. A gas kiln was a must for me. I especially love gas firing because of the chemistry that takes place in the kiln. Each piece responds differently to its environment during the reduction firing, resulting in unique surfaces with rich and bold colors.
Five years later, Babu Ceramics has officially formed, and I’m ready for a new challenge: building my practice with more intention. I never imagined using my own name for my brand, but Babu represents my South Indian heritage, which is deeply connected to the vibrancy and style that have always been a part of me.
